Excerpt: ...that in almost every instance where American manufacturers have built up a large business in Europe they were represented by their own branch houses located in one or more of the principal continental cities. I have lately been told of a very characteristic instance of how some so-called export agents do not assist foreign trade. A large and wealthy continental dealer, happening last fall upon the catalogue of a United States factory, found in it a line of implements which would suit his trade. He wrote to the factory, asking for net prices, terms, etc. To this letter no direct reply was received. Some weeks later, however, he received a letter from an agent in New York dilating on the merits of the implements in question and wanting to know how many the dealer would give an order for, etc. The dealer again wrote to the factory, stating that he did not understand this manner of conducting business, and expressing a desire to deal direct with the manufacturers. No reply was made by the manufacturers, but the New York agent wrote a long letter saying he had the exclusive sale in Europe of the implements wanted, that doing business with him was just the same as dealing directly with the factory, and closin by saying that the firm had given up making the implements aske for and were devoting their energies to another line of goods. Another case came to my notice a few days since. A foreign representative of a lar e American factory sent home a good order which he had sold at four months time, documents on acceptance of the draft.
